Subject: Holidays

… You’ve probably seen the photos which I took on my holiday. During the rainy days we are having now they bring back good memories!

...Where did you spend your last summer holidays? What did you do during your holidays? What school holidays do you like most of all and why?...

 Hi Lily,

How are you getting on? Thanks you for your email. I hope you’re fine.

Well, I spent my last summer variously. Firstly, I was in the children’s camp where I learnt English and had fun. Then, in August, I took a little trip to Saint Petersburg where I visited many sights. By the way, I was in the Kazan Cathedral, saw many exhibits in the Hermitage and walked in the Peterhof Palace. Finally, in August I was at my grandmother’s.

My favourite holidays are in autumn. This season of the year is rich in different bright colours, so autumn is the most beautiful and coziest season.

Bye for now, I have to care for my little sister. Keep in touch. Write back soon.

… I am so fond of Japanese cartoons that I’ve decided to learn Japanese. Mum says it’s hard, but I think it’s worth it. Besides, their writing is cool!

…What languages do you learn at school? What other language would you like to learn and why? What do you think about my choice of Japanese?…

 Hello Ben,

Thanks for your email. I decided to drop you a quick line about learning foreign languages.

First, I want to say that we learn two languages at school: English and German. I find them very useful for my life. I think I’ll practise these languages during trips and at university.

As for other languages, I’m thinking of learning Greek because I’m interested in the Greek culture. Maybe, I’ll learn Italian one day. I want to visit this magnificent country.

Your idea to learn Japanese sounds great in spite of the difficult writing. At least, learning something new is the best way to train the brain and spend time usefully.

Hello Ben,

I was sorry to hear that you quarreled with your mum. I just want to tell you about my housework.

Well, in my opinion, children should help their parents with the housework because they are tired after work. In addition to that, doing the washing up and tidying your room is enough to help your parents.

As for me, I usually do the dusting and hoover the floor. I tidy my room once a week and do laundry every day and make my bed every morning.

Sometimes, I can clean the kitchen, but I hate it and moreover, I don’t like to mop the floor and clean the windows.

… Why don’t some people want to have any pets? Do you approve of keeping exotic pets like spiders or snakes and why? What pets are popular in your country? …

Hi Ben,

Thanks for your email. I decided to drop you a quick line about pets.

First, some people don’t want to have a pet for various reasons. Secondly, someone can have an allergic reaction. Thirdly, they had some bad experience.

As for keeping exotic animals at home, I think it is not a good idea. I mean, it is a big responsibility to have an exotic pet. They have wildlife instincts even when they are in captivity. So I wouldn’t recommend it at all.

The most popular pets in my country are cats, dogs, hamsters, parrots and aquarium fish. Of course, there are some people in Russia who keep exotic animals like bobcats and foxes.

 Hello Ben,

Thanks you for your email. I want to drop you a quick line to answer your questions.

Well, it’s important to get informed about the world news and domestic ones. If I want to know the events in my country, I sometimes read newspapers and watch TV. As for the world news, I surf the Internet.

By the way, I’m going to be a musician. That’s why I like to sing and play the musical instruments such as the piano and ukulele. However, I think English can be useful for my future job. Maybe, I will give concerts all over the world so I’ll need to communicate with people.

… Yesterday we had a class where we discussed different ecological problems. Our teacher suggested opening an eco-club, where we can do something useful for the environment.

… What ecological problem do you consider the most serious? What can young people do to protect the environment? Do you think ecological problems should be discussed at school, and why?...

Hi Paul,

Hope you are fine. I decided to drop you a quick line about ecological problems.

Many ecological problems destroy our planet nowadays, but the most serious among them are the polluted air and water. Thus, we should do something to reduce the pollution. To eliminate this, I think, we can exchange petrol in cars with electric power supply. As for protecting water, we should use it carefully: cut off any leakage and turn off water in the tap. Moreover, littering must be forbidden.

Well, I think it’s necessary to discuss ecological problems at school because it is very important to educate children concerning the care and love for our planet.

… Frankly, I don’t understand why some people like classical music. I adore rock and usually listen to it on my way home from school. If my favourite band comes to our town, I’ll definitely go to their concert.

… What kind of music do you like? Do you think it is necessary to have music lessons at school, why? What musical instrument would you like to play?...

Hi Harry,

Thanks for your email. I decided to drop you a quick line about music.

You can be surprised by the fact I’m into the classical music. Moreover, I often listen to Rock and Jazz just to have fun.

In my opinion, it’s necessary to have music lessons at school to be well educated. You don’t need to be an expert in such music genres as, for example, R’n’B, Soul, Rap or Folk music, but you have to be informed.

In conclusion, I must say that I love music, I would like to play many musical instruments. I want to play the drum because I feel rhythms.

 Hi Ben,

Thanks for your email. I decided to drop you a quick line about my visit to the theatre.

I think it’s very exciting to be a well known actor because you can become famous around the world. In my opinion, every performance of an actor is a hard work on learning a character and words in the script.

I saw my last theatrical performance in November. It was an unusual version of Dead Souls, written by Gogol. The play was amazing because costumes and decorations corresponded to our epoch. So, the performance took place in The Kolyada Theatre in Yekaterinburg. I’ve visited many theatres, but I’ve never been to the Bolshoi Theatre.

Hi Emma,

Hope you are fine. You asked me about visiting museums.

I think it is very exciting. Firstly, it gives you unforgettable impressions and new information. Secondly, when you visit museums, you learn a lot about history and art. And finally, the museums are the best places for self-education and a quiet pastime.

Maybe, I’ll set up the museum of musical instruments or old books. I’m really into music and reading books and, by the way, I’ve got something to share.

So, as mentioned above, visiting museums is a great pastime. Furthermore, I love going to theatres, walking with friends, playing musical instruments and reading books in my free time.

Hi Ben,

I’m so happy to hear from you and I hope you are fine.

Yes, I agree with your opinion about school list of books. It’s too large for me. My list contains lots of poems and novels and some of them are incredibly interesting. I mean, I don’t mind reading school literature because I like novels, short stories and legends. My favourite book is Dead Souls, by Nikolai Gogol, that you can find in my school list of books.

As for electronic books, they get very popular nowadays. Of course, an electronic book is a good choice when you travel because it’s compact and can contain hundreds of books.

...What jobs would you like a robot to do at your home? What else can robots be used for? Do you find science fiction films interesting, why or why not?....

 Hi Max,

I’m glad to hear from you. Thank you for your email.

I think, a robot is just an incredible invention. It can do any job. I wish I had a robot at home that could help me with the housework and cooking.

As a matter of fact, robots can do not only the housework. Firstly, some robots help the police to solve crimes doing the actions which are dangerous for people. Secondly, some of them are irreplaceable in medicine. They can perform complex surgeries. Finally, people use robots in factories because they can work 24 hours a day.

As for science fiction films, I find them interesting because they show our possible future.

… Do people have the Earth Hour in your country? What can people do to save energy in their everyday life? Do you approve of the Green Movement, and why?…

Hi Ben,

Thanks for your email. I want to drop you a quick line about the Earth Hour.

In my opinion, the Earth Hour is a great event and it’s also held in Russia.  It’s very exciting when the whole city gets dark. Lights are switched off for one hour everywhere simultaneously.

But this single event can’t save the electricity for a long period. We should do our best to save our planet. For example, we can use programmable thermostats at home and turn off electronic equipment rather than let it run in stand-by mode.

I think, the Green Movement came up with one of the most important ideas which can attract people to ecological problems.

Hi Ann,

Hope you are fine. I want to drop you a quick line about a diet.

There are many trends to eat healthy food nowadays and one of the most popular is vegetarianism. I think people become vegetarians because they have allergic reactions to some products. Another reason is that some people are animal rights activists who don’t support any animal products including food and cosmetics. So, there are many reasons why vegetarianism is popular.

Frankly speaking, my classmates often come late to school. Some of them can oversleep and miss a lesson, other teens live either far from school or just don’t want to come on time. As for me, I never come late to school even though it takes me about 30 minutes to get to school. Consequently, some teachers give us bad marks for this misconduct as a punishment.

Bye for now, I have to care for my little sister. Write back soon.

How are you? I’m glad to get your email.

Well, my favourite subject is Literature because I’m fond of reading books. By the way, I think that English is an important subject because English is useful in trips and at university. But there are many subjects which I can’t stand because of lots of homework such as Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and so on. Frankly speaking, it takes me about five hours to do all tasks and I get really tired. That’s the reason why I have some time for my hobbies only at weekends. So I like playing the guitar, singing and walking outdoors in my free time.

Well, there are lots of bright and unforgettable holidays in Russia but the most popular is New Year. Moreover, it is my favourite holiday because of lots of preparation for it in advance and the magic atmosphere on this day. New Year in Russia is celebrated from the 31st of December to the 1st of January. By the way, there are many traditions related to this holiday. People usually drink champagne and eat the salad ‘Olivier’ on this holiday, and then they listen to the Kremlin clock striking twelve. After it, the night sky above the city is lit with lots of fireworks.
