OGE, Speaking Part, FIPI Monologues

1. You are going to give a talk about your school holidays. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences).
Remember to say:
• when you have school holidays;
• what school holidays you would make longer, and why;
• what you enjoy doing during your school holidays;
• what your attitude to school holidays is.

I’d like to give a talk about my school holidays. We’ve got holidays four times a year: in winter, spring, summer and autumn.

The longest holidays are in summer and I’d like to have spring holidays a little bit longer. In my opinion, spring is the best time to have a rest before the final exams.

Frankly speaking, my favourite holidays are in summer. I usually go to the language camp and celebrate my birthday in June, then I visit my grandma in July and prepare for the new school year in August.

By the way, I spent my last summer holidays making domestic trips. I was in the Crimea and visited Saint Petersburg with its beautiful palaces, bridges and parks. Moreover, I didn’t forget about self-education. I read, went to museums and theatres, did some sports and learnt something new. Speaking about other school holidays I want to say some words about autumn holidays. I really like autumn. It is rich in different bright colours and that’s why I usually take photos of autumn trees. Secondly, I love sitting in a café drinking coffee on a rainy day.

As a conclusion, I want to say that school holidays are the best time both for students and teachers. It’s time to have a good rest and to prepare for the next term or the new school year.

2. You are going to give a talk about travelling. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences). Remember to say:
• why people like travelling;
• what means of transport are the best for travelling, and why;
• what places in Russia you would like to visit;
• what your attitude to travelling is.

 I’d like to give a talk about travelling. I think people like travelling because it’s a good way to see how people live abroad and learn their national culture. Moreover, most people want to have heart-warming memories and lead happy life.

You can use any means of transport when you travel. It can be a plane, a train, a cruise ship or just a car. All depends on your goals, wishes and possibilities. I prefer travelling by plane because it’s safe for me and I can move fast long distances. By the way, I don’t mind travelling by car. You can stop wherever you want to take a break and enjoy nature. As a fact, the car is more suitable for domestic trips.

There are many places in Russia that I want to visit. I’ve gone to the seaside many times but I’ve never been to mountains. That’s why I’d like to visit the Altai Mountains, the Urals and the Caucasus Mountains. I think they are the most magnificent places in Russia.

So, travelling is expensive but it gives fun experiences and unforgettable impressions. That’s all that I wanted to tell you about travelling.

Remember to say:
• why most people enjoy travelling;
• what people like doing while travelling;
• what place you would like to go to, and why;
• what your attitude to travelling is.

I’d like to talk about travelling. I think most people enjoy travelling because it’s a good way to see how people live abroad and learn their national culture. Moreover, most people want to have heart-warming memories and lead happy life.

Travel involves actions, so people usually walk. If they come to the seaside, they swim. If people go to mountains, they just climb them. So, there are many activities that you can do during your travel. As for me, I prefer going on guided [ˈgaɪdɪd] tours or visit national museums. I also like sightseeing.

There are many places that I want to visit. I’ve gone to the seaside many times but I’ve never been to mountains. That’s why I’d like to visit the Altai Mountains, the Urals and the Caucasus Mountains. I think they are the most magnificent places in my country.

So, travelling is expensive but it gives fun experiences and unforgettable impressions. That’s all that I wanted to tell you about travelling.

3.You are going to give a talk about reading books. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences). Remember to say:
• whether reading is popular with teenagers, and why, or why not;
• what kind of books you like reading;
• why many people prefer e-books to paper books;
• what your attitude to reading is.

I’d like to give a talk about reading books. In my opinion, reading books isn’t very popular among teenagers nowadays. This is because they are more interested in watching films or playing computer games. But I can’t consider myself one of those teenagers. I’m fond of reading books.

I prefer novels, detectives and non-fiction. My favourite story is called ‘Fahrenheit 451’ by Ray Bradbury. It is about a society in which it is forbidden to read books and self-educate.

That’s a fact that many people prefer e-books to paper ones because of the volume of digital storage. It can also save the environment because it prevents from using much paper and deforestation.

As a conclusion I want to say that I can't imagine my life without reading. It trains my brain and develops abstract thinking.

Remember to say:
• what kind of books modern teenagers enjoy reading;
• whether libraries are necessary or not, and why;
• what book you have read recently, and what it was about;
• what your attitude to reading is.

I’d like to give a talk about reading books. I’m glad to realise that more and more teenagers read books nowadays. I think they prefer reading simple literature including comics, fantasy and adventure.

As for me, libraries are the best places to read any book you want but they are less and less popular because e-books replace paper ones. I’m really into reading books.

I prefer reading novels and my last book was ‘Fahrenheit 451’ by Ray Bradbury. It is about a society in which it is forbidden to read books and self-educate. So, I really like it.

As a conclusion I want to say that I can't imagine my life without reading. It trains my brain and develops abstract thinking.

4. You are going to give a talk about keeping fit. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences).
Remember to say:
• why doing sport is very important for modern teenagers;
• what else besides sport young people do to keep fit;
• what you enjoy doing in your free time;
• what your attitude to doing sports activities is.

Now, I would like to give a talk about keeping fit. Of course, a healthy lifestyle is more popular nowadays, because teenagers care of themselves. More and more people eat healthy food, go in for sports and give up bad habits. They can go jogging, play tennis, football or volleyball, they can also go swimming or just ride a bicycle.

Moreover, there are lots of opportunities to keep fit and healthy besides sports. You can eat vegetables, fruit and drink a lot of water. Secondly, healthy sleep can help you feel better and extend your life.

As for me, I like practising yoga in the mornings and go swimming sometimes. Besides, I don’t follow any diet but I rarely eat junk food.

As a conclusion, I’d like to say that keeping fit is very important in our life. It helps people be long-livers.

5. You are going to give a talk about animals. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences). Remember to say:
• what wild animals live in your region;
• whether it is a good idea to keep a wild animal as a pet, and why;
• why people build zoos in cities and towns;
• what your attitude to zoos is.

I’d like to give a talk about animals. There are many wild animals in our region. Some of them live in the woods like squirrels, foxes, bears and wolves. Other animals like beavers [ˈbiːvə], badgers [ˈbæʤə], ermines [ˈɜːmɪn], elk, live in a natural reserve.

So, having a pet is a big responsibility. Many people keep some pets at home like cats, dogs, hamsters [ˈhæmstə] and birds. But having a wild animal as a pet is even a bigger responsibility, it concerns especially exotic animals. I think it is not easy to look after them. They have wildlife instincts even when they are in captivity. That’s why I wouldn’t recommend anybody to have a wild animal as a pet.

As for zoos, I think people build them in the cities to show adults [ˈædʌlts] and children how wild animals look and live. Moreover, for specialists it’s easier to observe wild animals’ behavior and habits while they are in the zoos.

In my opinion, zoos are built to save endangered animal species. It's better to rescue animals than to leave them helpless. That’s why my attitude to zoos is positive.

6. You are going to give a talk about your school. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences).
Remember to say:
• what your typical school day is like;
• what subjects at school you find most useful for your future, and why;
• what you are going to do when you leave school;
• what your attitude to school life is.

I’d like to give a talk about my school. My typical school day starts at 8 in the morning and ends at half past two in the afternoon. There is a big break when we have lunch. I don’t eat at the canteen [kænˈtiːn], so I’ve always got a lunchbox. After lessons we sometimes have extra class activities where we take part in different contests or prepare for tests and exams. By the way, we have 6 or 7 lessons a day.

Frankly speaking, I'm good at humanities, such as Russian, English, and Literature. As for Maths, I’m not good at Algebra and Geometry because I don’t like computing and calculation. As for other subjects, I find English and Geography most useful for my future because I would like to travel a lot.

As a matter of fact, I’m going to enter the musical college after Year 9 of the secondary school because I want to be a musician.

Finally, I must say that school prepares us for life but sometimes it is excessive and boring. That’s all that I wanted to tell you about my school.

7. You are going to give a talk about school life. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences).
Remember to say:
• what your weekday is like;
• what you like about your school most of all;
• whether you prefer classroom learning or online learning, and why;
• what your attitude to your school life is.

I’d like to give a talk about my school life. My weekday usually starts at 6 a.m because I must be at school at 8 in the morning. According to our timetable, we’ve got 6 or 7 lessons a day. As a matter of fact, there is a big break when we have lunch but I don’t eat in the canteen, so I’ve always got a lunchbox. After lessons we sometimes have extra class activities where we take part in different contests or prepare for tests and exams. However, all lessons end at two o’clock in the afternoon.

Frankly [ˈfræŋklɪ] speaking, I study at the secondary school and I like the education here. Many teachers are kind and they always ready to help every student.

As for the teaching methods [ˈmeθəd], I prefer online learning to classroom learning because nobody disturbs me and I don’t lose time. If I want to go into details, I can just look up different materials.

So, my attitude to school life is each day different because of subjects according to the timetable. That’s all that I wanted to tell you about my school life.

8. You are going to give a talk about sports.
You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences). Remember to say:
• why a lot of young people do sports nowadays;
• what sports clubs and teams there are in your school;
• what you do to keep fit;
 • what your attitude to doing sports activities is.

Now, I would like to give a talk about sports. In my opinion, young people are fond of sports because it keeps us fit, makes us healthy and more organized. It gives us pleasure and makes stronger.

Among sports clubs of our school I can join swimming, dancing, hockey and football clubs. So, we’ve got two stadiums [ˈsteɪdɪəm] in the school yard. There is also a swimming pool at our school. Dance classes take place in our gym.

As for me, I like practising yoga in the mornings and go swimming in the school pool. Besides, I don’t follow any diet but I rarely eat junk food.

In conclusion, I’d like to say that sports activities are very important in our life. They help people kip fit and live longer.

 9. You are going to give a talk about environmental problems. Remember to say:
• why people worry about environmental problems nowadays;
• what the most serious environmental problem in the place where you live is;
• what young people can do to improve the ecological situation;
• what your attitude to environmental problems is.

I’d like to give a talk about environmental problems. I think people worry about environmental problems nowadays because they make life more difficult. Trash underfoot can annoy you. Polluted soil can harm harvest. Unfortunately, such problems are all related to my city.

The most serious environmental problems in the city where I live are the pollution of air and water, the fires and the smoke fogs. It is very difficult to solve all problems at once. But we can save our planet step by step.

Fortunately, more and more young people collect rubbish for recycling and carry their purchases [ˈpɜːʧɪs] in recyclable [rɪˈsaɪkləbl] bags. As for water, we should shorten its usage when taking a shower. We can save water and electricity at home.

So, the environmental issues are serious for me. We must care about our planet.

 10. You are going to give a talk about your school. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences). Remember to say:
• what you like about your school most of all;
• how many lessons a day you usually have;
• what school subjects you have chosen for your exams, and why;
 • what your attitude to the number of subjects you have to learn is.

I’d like to give a talk about my school. Despite studying at a regular school, I like it. I like the education and teachers the most of all. Many teachers are kind and they always ready to help every student.

According to our timetable, I usually have got six or seven lessons a day. They are different each day but maths, Russian and English must be learnt every day.

By the way, my favourite subjects are English and social studies. That’s the reason why I’ve chosen them for the exams. Besides, I like discussing actual problems in English. This is the second reason.

So, my attitude to the number of subjects isn’t positive because some subjects are uninteresting and optional. I mean Art and IT. That’s all that I wanted to tell you about my school.

11. You are going to give a talk about your free time. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences). Remember to say:
• whether you have a lot of free time, and why, or why not;
• what you enjoy doing in your free time;
• what your Sunday afternoons are like;
• what your attitude to planning your free time is.

I’d like to talk about my free time. I’m a student at the moment and after a hard day at school and hours of homework I definitely don’t have enough free time. In my opinion, we should be given a bit less homework to have some time for our hobbies and activities of interest. That’s why I’ve got some time for myself only on Sunday because it is the only day I don’t have to go to school.

Frankly speaking, my interests are various. Firstly, I’m into music so I like playing the piano and sing. I also play the guitar and ukulele [juːkəˈleɪlɪ] sometimes. Secondly, my favourite pastime [ˈpɑːstaɪm] is when I read an interesting book or watch an exciting action film. And finally, I enjoy spending my leisure time with my friends.

As for my Sunday afternoon, it is my favourite part of the day when I can read a book on the way to grandma, then visit my friends to go out together, and finally, watch a film before going to bed.

In conclusion, I want to say that if you plan your free time well, you can have the best weekend. I think that’s all that I wanted to tell you about my free time.

12. You are going to give a talk about films. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences). Remember to say:
• what kinds of films modern teenagers enjoy;
• where you prefer watching films: on TV, on the Internet or in the cinema, and why;
• what film you have seen recently, what it was about; • what your attitude to watching films as a way to spend your free time is.

I’d like to give a talk about films. Every person has a unique taste for films. As for me and my friends, we enjoy watching detectives, musicals and adventures. Thus we watch films at leisure time and for pleasure. Probably this is the reason why young people prefer such genres as comedies, cartoons or thrillers to more serious ones.

Honestly [ˈɒnɪstlɪ], I like watching films on the Internet. Obviously, it’s more comfortable. I don’t need to go out and can watch a film at any time I like. But sometimes I go to the cinema with my friends and I really enjoy this pastime.

Frankly speaking, I have just seen the cartoon ‘Soul’, by my favourite animation studio Pixar. I like it a lot. Moreover, I was crying while I was watching it because the plot of the story touched me much. The moral of the story is to value each moment of life because it can ends in any time.

Finally, I want to summarize all. My attitude to watching films is as follows: it’s a good way to spend my free time and look at life from the other side. I think that’s all that I wanted to tell you about films.

13. You are going to give a talk about school homework. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences). Remember to say:
• how long it takes you to do your homework;
• what subject you usually start with, and why;
• whether schoolchildren should be given more or less homework, and why;
• what your attitude to school homework is.

I’d like to talk about my school homework. It usually takes me from four to five hours to do my homework. Of course, it depends on the day, for example Tuesday is the busiest day of the week and it means that at weekends I have to spend a lot of time to finish all tasks.

As a matter of fact, I usually start with the subjects I’m good at such as geography and English. One reason is that it takes less time and less energy to finish things you like or at least don’t hate. Unfortunately, I can’t stand maths and physics and I put off my homework till later.

That’s a fact that after a hard school day and five hours of homework many schoolchildren are completely exhausted. So, we should be given a bit less homework to have some time for our hobbies and activities of interests.

In my opinion, homework is useful despite the amount to be done. Most students can’t learn anything without reviewing the material so homework is a good way to review the things learnt at school. I think that’s all that I wanted to tell you about my school homework.

14. You are going to give a talk about photography. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences). Remember to say:
• why people like taking photos;
• why taking photos is more popular today than it was in the past;
• what the best photo you have ever taken is;
 • what your attitude to taking photos is.

I’d like to give a talk about photography. It’s true that people nowadays like taking photos a lot. First, our photos give us the opportunity to save the important moments of life and have a look at them at any time we want. Then, it’s very popular to share photos on any websites. We take photos of our trips, pets and family and can show them to other people via Instagram, for example.

Obviously, this hobby is more popular today than it was in the past. I believe that the main reason for that is the fact that everyone has a photo camera nowadays. Moreover, most people use their smartphones to take photos. As we’ve always got our mobiles with us we can take a photo and just send it anybody we want.

Frankly speaking, my photos are often thematic and I like landscapes of Yekaterinburg so my best photo is where the buildings of different epochs are pictured. So, the contrast looks great.

As a conclusion, I’d like to say, that my attitude to photographing is good because it’s my hobby and it helps me spend more time outdoors. I think that’s all that I wanted to tell you about photography.

15. You are going to give a talk about TV. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences). Remember to say:
• why people spend time watching TV;
• what most teenagers prefer: watching TV or browsing the Internet, and why;
• whether there is a TV programme you really like;
• what your attitude to watching TV as a way to spend your free time is.

I’d like to give a talk about TV. The goal of TV is to inform people about the latest news and entertain them. Firstly, I think that modern teenagers spend less time in front of their TVs than their parents do. Secondly, nowadays we have other devices for information and entertainment like our laptops and mobile phones. So, that’s why teenagers prefer using the Internet.

Despite the fact, that I don’t watch TV a lot, I like one programme on it. It’s called ‘Urgant Tonight’. I like watching it because the TV presenter invites interesting people like actors, singers, sportsmen. Ivan Urgant takes interviews and plays various games with star guests to amuse the viewers. I find it funny and interesting.

As a conclusion I must say that watching TV as a way to spend my free time isn’t a good idea. Instead of it, I prefer reading books. I think that’s all that I wanted to tell you about TV.

16. You are going to give a talk about TV. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences). Remember to say:
• whether watching TV is a popular pastime with teenagers, and why, or why not;
• how many hours a week you watch TV;
• what TV programme is the most popular within your family;
• what your attitude to TV is.

I’d like to give a talk about TV. First, I think that modern teenagers spend less time in front of their TVs than their parents do. Secondly, nowadays we have other devices for information and entertainment like our laptops and mobile phones.

As for me, I don’t watch TV a lot. I think I spend about a couple of hours a week doing it.

My parents are fans of action films and on Sundays we watch them all together. We also like watching the programme called ‘Tonight’. We like it because the TV presenter invites interesting people like actors, singers, sportsmen and so on. Ivan Urgant takes interviews and plays various games with star guests to amuse the viewers. We find it funny.

As a conclusion I must say that watching TV as a way to spend my free time isn’t a good idea. Of course, I can sometimes have fun and watch TV but I believe that it makes me degrade. I think that’s all that I wanted to tell you about TV.

16. You are going to give a talk about your best friend. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences). Remember to say:
• what people need friends for;
• how long you and your friend have known each other;
• what you enjoy doing together;
• what your attitude to friendship is.

I’d like to talk about my best friend. First, I want to say that everybody needs friends for many reasons. No man is useless while he has a friend. When you are in bad mood, your friends can support you and give advice. Friendship with nice people can give you unforgettable impressions and push for interesting adventures.

Many people have had friends since their childhood. As for me, I and my best friend ..., we have known each other for about ten years. We made friends when we were five years old. Frankly speaking, we haven’t got many common interests but we like spending our pastime together. She is good-tempered, generous, honest, helpful and outgoing. We live in different cities but we don’t stop communicating.

We often chat online and when my friend comes to visit me, we usually walk all day long. By the way, I really enjoy traveling with my best friend. We’ve already been to Montenegro, Serbia, Moscow and Kazan. It’s true that when ...  needs to go back to her hometown, we get sad and miss each other. But we definitely know that we can meet in the nearest future.

In my opinion, friendship is very important for me and I’ll always need true friends. A friend in need is a friend indeed. My friends always stand by me in any situation. We share joys and sorrows and just have a good time together.
