I’m good at such subjects as Literature, Geography and English. Moreover, these are my favourite ones.

There are many after-school activities such as contests or extra lessons where students can prepare for the exams.

I like my teachers here. They can help me at any time and give me advice which can be useful in my life.

6. What would you recommend to a student who wants to improve his school results? (4:41)

I’d recommend to a student who wants to improve his school results to work hard, be attentive and curious at lessons. That’s the only way to be the best student and make some progress.

 

¹2 ‘How do the teenagers feel about holidays and special days?’

I’m a teenager in my mid-teens. I’m fifteen years old.

2. In what season do you have your birthday? (1:21)

I have my birthday in summer and, exactly, in June.

3. How do you usually celebrate your birthday? (2:11)

My family usually prepares for my birthday in advance. My mum buys a sponge cake, sweets and soft drinks. It isn’t healthy food but it’s suitable for special days like my birthday. So, I spend these days with my family and friends.

4. What is your best birthday present you have ever had? (3:01)

As I’m a nice-looking girl I want to get some jewelries, for example, a pretty locket or a stylish pendant. So, I was offered a pendant in a minimalism style and a stylish brooch for my previous birthday.

5. What other holidays and special days are celebrated in your family? (3:52)

I and my family like to celebrate many holidays. First, these are New Year and Christmas. We also like Pancake Week and Easter.

6. What is from your point of view, the best present for a teenager? (4:43)

Well, all depends on whether we speak about a young girl or a boy. It can be a season ticket for a gym for boys and some beauty products for girls. Also, it’s very important to take into account personal interests.

 

¹3 ‘How do people feel about doing sports in your region?’

1. How old are you?

I’m a teenager in my mid-teens. I’m fifteen years old.

2. How many times a week do you do sports?

I do yoga every day and sometimes, I can either go jogging or swimming.

3. What sport is the most popular with teenagers in your region? (2:04)

The most popular sports with teenagers in our region are hockey and basketball so we have the best teams of these kinds of sports and many teenagers visit basketball and hockey championships every year.

4. What sport facilities are available in the place where you live? (2:48)

There are many sport facilities in my city like sport schools, gyms, stadiums and sport palaces.

5. Why do you think it’s important to keep fit? (3:33)

I think it is important to keep fit because people can get healthy and live longer. Also, you can be in a good shape.

6. What would you advise to a person who wants to keep fit? (4:18)

I would recommend to a person who wants to keep fit to eat healthy food, go in for sports and give up bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol.

 

¹4 ‘How do the teenagers spend their weekends?’

1. How old are you?

I’m a teenager in my mid-teens. I’m fifteen years old.

2. What’s your favourite day of the week? Why do you like it? (1:22)

My favourite day of the week is Sunday because it is the only day when I can afford to do no homework but just devote all time to myself.

3. When do you usually wake up at weekends? (2:11)

I have to get up early on Saturdays because I’ve got various lessons with tutors. As for Sundays, I like to keep late hours.

4. How do you usually spend your weekends?

On Saturdays I usually have lessons with tutors on various subjects. Then, in the evening I usually watch films or read favourite books. On Sundays I hang out with friends or stay at home doing my hobbies.

5. What would you recommend to a student to make his weekends interesting?

First of all, I would recommend to a student not to lose time in vain, not to wait for good opportunities to come but do his best and join a great company of friends and communicate with them.

 

¹5 ‘What do you think about your school?’

1. What grade are you in?

I’m in grade 9 at school.

2. How many classes a day do you usually have?

I usually have seven classes a day because we don’t study on Saturdays at our school.

3. What sport facilities are there in your school?

There are many sport facilities in my school such as two gyms, a swimming pool and many stadiums for football, basketball and skating.

4. What is your school uniform like?

We don’t have a strict dress code at school but we should wear a black bottom and a white top so I always wear modest classic clothes like a suit, a white shirt, dark brown trousers or black jeans. If it is cold outdoors, I can wear a polo, a turtle neck sweater or a cardigan with long sleeves. Besides, I always have replaceable footwear.

5. What school events do you have during your school year?

There are many events at our school like extra classes, different contests, festivals, sport events and preparation classes on different subjects.

6. What would you like to improve at your school?

I think our school doesn’t need general improvement but, frankly speaking, I’d like to change the time of the beginning of the school day. I wish it were at 10 o’clock. Finally, I’d like to get rid of some contests and endless tests.

Frankly speaking, there are not many concerts but they’re always unforgettable and bright. I have two or three such events during the school year and these performances are devoted to Maslenitsa, New Year and Victory Day.

5. Do you enjoy taking part in these school events? Why?

I always enjoy taking part in these school events because the school can not only teach us but it sometimes entertains us.

6. What event would you recommend organizing at your school, and why?

I’d recommend organizing a quest which can unite schoolchildren and raise the team spirit because in this game you need to work in a team and solve riddles together.

 

¹7 ‘People's attitudes to their city, town or village’

1. How long have you been living in your city, town or village?

I’ve been living in my city for all my life, I mean for 15 years.

2. The place where you live what is it famous for?

I live in Yekaterinburg which is sometimes called the third capital of Russia. So, it’s well-known  for the murder of the Romanovs, the last royal dynasty. Now it is a beautiful city with the developed infrastructure, I mean the industry, educational centers and cultural events.

3. When was your city, town or village founded?

Yekaterinburg was founded on the 18th of November, 1723 by Vasiliy Tatischev and Wilhelm de Gennin. Tatischev chose the place for the future town and de Gennin built it.

4. What season is the best for visiting your city, town or village, and why?

In my opinion, the best season for visiting my city is summer because climate is severe here and we have long cold winters beginning in November and ending in April.

5. What is your favourite place in your city, town or village? Why do you like it?

Well, my favourite place in my city is the embankment in the city centre which has a nickname ‘Plotinka’. It offers an incredible view of the city with skyscrapers and other beautiful buildings.

6. What place in your hometown would you recommend to visiting?

There is a nice skyscraper in my hometown. It was named after Russian poet and musician, Vladimir Vysotsky and it is the third tallest skyscraper in our country. It is 188 meters high and it is the best observation deck in the city. So, if you want to see Yekaterinburg from the bird's-eye view, you should visit ‘Vysotsky’.

 

¹8 ‘Teenagers’ attitude to English language learning’

1. What is your favourite school subject?

My favourite school subject is English because I’m really into learning languages, culture and history of some countries, for example, the UK.

2. When did you start learning English?

I started learning English in the kindergarten but I made some progress only one year ago.

3. What do you do at your English lessons?

At English lessons we usually practise many activities such as reading, listening comprehension, grammar and speaking. First, we review the material of previous lessons and then we learn grammar and some new words. Of course, my lessons are in English so I always practise my pronunciation.

4. Do you find learning English easy or difficult? Why?

Frankly speaking, I find learning English quite difficult because I have some problems with the vocabulary. Learning English assumes discipline and daily practicing.

5. What other foreign language would you like to learn, and why?

I’d like to learn German because I have just started to learn it at school and I got interested in it. I really want to visit Germany one day and I’m thinking of studying there in the future.

6. What would you recommend a person to do to improve his or her English?

I think I’d recommend a person who wants to improve English to learn it every day and practise speaking with peers either in a summer camp or abroad. He or she should find at least 15 minutes a day to learn new words, listen to native speakers and talk.

 

¹9 ‘Teenagers’ attitude to TV and TV programmes’

1. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Well, I can spend my free time walking outdoors, reading favourite books, watching interesting films or listening to music. I really enjoy these activities.

2. How often do you go to the cinema or to the theatre?

Frankly speaking, I am a theatre-goer but I rarely go to the cinema. I like both films and performances but I prefer watching films at home. As for theatre plays, I can’t stand watching them on TV or via the Internet.

3. How much time do you usually watch TV every day?

First, I must say that I don’t watch TV every day because I’m so busy and I haven’t got much time for it. But on holidays I can watch TV for two hours every day.

4. What TV programmes are popular with your family?

My parents want to be informed so they often watch news.     Moreover, they’re big sports fans. That’s because we usually watch championships together.

5. Do you prefer TV or the Internet? Why?

I prefer the Internet to TV because I watch what I want and it depends on me what programme to choose. Moreover, there are not many advertisements in the Internet.

6. What TV programme would you recommend your friends to watch?

I think I’d recommend the TV program called the ‘Traveller’s Notes’ because I find it very interesting and breathtaking. This programme is spectacular, impressive, striking and informative.

 

¹10 ‘Teenagers’ daily routine’

1. How many days a week do you go to school?

I go to school five days a week but two days off aren’t enough for me because I’m so busy and tired.

2. When do you go to bed in the evening?

I usually go to bed at eleven o’clock p.m. or even earlier.

3. How do you spend your mornings?

First, I get up at six o’clock, then I brush my teeth, take a shower, comb and do my hair to wear it loose and then I get dressed. Finally, after breakfast I pack my satchel and go to school at half past seven.

4. What means of transport do you use to get to school?

I usually go to school on foot because it isn’t far from me but sometimes, when I’m late, my mum can give me a lift.

5. What do you usually have for lunch?

Well, I usually start with some appetizers such as vegetable salads, then I eat soup or pasta or potatoes and meat as a main course. I finish with desserts and tea or fruit water.

6. What would you recommend a teenager who wants to stay fit and healthy?

I think I’d recommend a teenager who wants to stay fit and healthy to eat many vegetables and fruit, give up junk food and bad habits and go in for sports. He or she also needs to sleep at least for eight hours.

 

¹ 11 ‘Teenagers’ eating habits’

1. How many meals a day do you usually have?

I usually have five meals a day. I have breakfast at 7 o’clock at home, then goes the morning snack at school. When I come home from school I have lunch at 3 p.m., then I have afternoon snack and dinner in the evening.

2. What is your favourite food?

I love Italian cuisine so my favourite food is pizza. I like all kinds of it with different fillings but my favourite is a cheese pizza.

3. What do you usually have for lunch at school?

Well, I usually have a lunchbox and a bun, pasta and some vegetables within. As for drinks, I can bring a bottle of water or tea in the thermos.

4. Do you prefer fast food or homemade food? Why?

I prefer homemade food to fast food because it’s healthier and can be various. My mum always cooks me my favourite dishes and they are always very tasty!

5. Would you like to take part in a cookery show? Why?

I think I wouldn’t like to take part in a cookery show because I hate cooking. It’s boring for me and it takes much time. Moreover, I can spoil a dish even if I follow the cooling recipe.

6. What would you recommend a teenager who wants to keep fit?

I’d recommend a teenager who wants to keep fit to eat many vegetables and fruit, give up junk food and bad habits and go in for sports. He or she also needs to sleep at least for 8 hours.

 

¹ 12 ‘If teenagers are worried about ecological problems’

1. Where would you like to live: in a big city or in the country?

I’d like to live in a big city due to more opportunities for studying, creativity and the choice of the future profession. There are also many places to go in a big city like museums, cinemas and theatres.

2. What are the advantages of living in the country?

I think there are many advantages of living in the country. First, the ecology and nature aren’t polluted because there aren’t many factories in the country. Then, the environment is quiet and the rhythm of life is calm, unlike in a big city.

3. What is the main ecological problem in the place where you live?

There are many ecological problems in Yekaterinburg but the main of them is the polluted air because of many factories and plants in the city.

4. Do you and your friends care about ecological problems? Why?

Yes, I and my friends care about ecological problems so we try to use ecological products instead of plastic ones, not to litter and save water and electricity.

5. Have you ever taken part in ecological projects at school?

I have never taken part in ecological projects at school but there will be such a possibility one day because it’s important for me to save our planet.

6. What would you recommend a person who wants to improve situation in his or her hometown?

Well, I’d recommend this person to start with himself, I mean to use less plastic bags, to throw out the garbage in a proper place, to save water by turning off the  tap and to switch off the electricity when not used.

Well, I was seven when my parents gave me my first mobile phone.

I use my mobile phone for studying and entertainment. For example, I can find some information which can help me do my homework and I can watch a film or play a game in my free time.

3. Who do you usually send SMSs to?

I usually send SMSs to my parents and relatives, to mum, dad and granny.

4. How can you use your mobile phone to learn foreign languages?

I often use my mobile phone for learning English. There is an electronic dictionary and apps for practicing my English via mobile phone.

5. Where do you usually switch off your mobile phone?

I usually switch off my phone in places where I need to be concentrated, like school, theater or cinema.

6. Why are most teachers against using mobile phones at schools?

In my opinion, most teachers are against using mobile phones at schools because they think students are distracted with notifications by phones and they can’t think on their own but search the information on the Internet.

1. How many PE lessons a week do you have?

Well, I have about three PE lessons a week but I think it isn’t enough.

2. What sports facilities do you have at school?

There are many sport facilities at my school such as two gyms, a swimming pool and many stadiums for football, basketball and skating.

3. What do you do at your PE lessons?

First, I do the warm-up, then I run and in the middle of the lesson I sometimes play basketball or volleyball.

4. What sports do you do regularly?

I practise yoga three times a week and it’s very good either for my body or brain.

5. Do you think winter is a good season for sports? Why?

I think winter is really a good season for sport because only in winter you can ski, snowboard and skate.

6. What would you recommend to a teenager who wants to stay fit and healthy?

I’d recommend a teenager who wants to keep fit to eat many vegetables and fruit, give up junk food and bad habits and go in for sports. He or she also needs to sleep at least for eight hours.

1. What kind of music do you usually listen to?

I usually listen to classical music, Jazz and Rock.

2. What musical instrument would you like to learn to play?

I would like to learn to play the saxophone because I’m keen on Jazz music and I think the sound of this instrument is magical.

3. What clubs or societies can you attend at your school?

Well, I can attend a chess club, a dance club, the society of journalists and one of the sports clubs

4. How often do you have school concerts and performances?

Frankly speaking, there are not many concerts at our school and I have two or three such events during the school year.

I prefer going to the theater because I like live performances like operas and ballets.

1. What colour of clothes do you prefer wearing?

Well, I prefer a light top and a bright bottom like, for example, a white shirt and red trousers.

2. What clothes do you usually wear?

I usually wear jackets, shirts, sweaters, trousers and jeans.

3. How often do you go shopping for clothes?

Frankly speaking, I don’t go shopping very often so I can buy something for me twice a month.

4. Who do you usually go shopping with?

I usually go shopping with my mum and sometimes with my granny.

5. Do you have to wear a school uniform? If so, what is it like?

I don’t have to wear any school uniform but I always wear a dark jacket, a white shirt and trousers when I’m in school.

6. Does the career of a fashion designer attract you or not? Why?

The career of a fashion designer doesn’t attract me because I don’t like sewing. Besides, I’d like to be a musician.

1. How old were you when you learnt to read?

I was about 4 years old when I learnt to read.

2. What do you like to read about?

I like to read science fiction about travel in time.

3. Who is your favourite writer?

My favourite writer is Nikolai Gogol.

4. What do you usually do at Literature lessons?

At Literature lessons I usually discuss the biography of a writer or read a book from the list of school reading.

5. What do you like to do in your free time apart from reading?

Besides reading I really like watching films and walking outdoors with friends.

6. What books do you prefer: the printed books or e-books? Why?

Well, I prefer the printed books because when I read such books I imagine the plot of the story better and remember it for a long time.

1. Where do you prefer to get news from: radio, newspapers, the Internet or some other source?

Frankly speaking, I prefer to get news from the Internet because I don’t have to listen to the radio or buy a newspaper.

2. Who listens to the radio in your family?

Well, my father often listens to the radio when he’s on his way to work.

3. What kind of TV programmes would you like to watch?

I’d like to watch travel programmes because I’d like to travel a lot in the future.

4. How often do you buy a newspaper or a magazine?

I never buy a newspaper or a magazine because I can learn some interesting information in the Internet.

5. For what purposes do you use the Internet?

Firstly, I use the Internet for studying. For example, I can learn English using different materials from the Internet. Secondly, I use it for entertainment. I watch YouTube a lot and like watching films.

6. Why, in your opinion, do a lot of people prefer learning news from the Internet?

In my opinion, a lot of people prefer learning news from the Internet because they’ve got the Internet access from their mobile phones so they can learn any information easily.

I think teenagers read less and less now because they’re more interested in watching films or playing computer games.

In my opinion, reading an English book is the best way to learn new words and practise pronunciation.

I’d recommend to my friend who wants to read something for pleasure a book called ‘The Great Gatsby’, by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, because it’s a short novel within the atmosphere of 1920s.

1. What is your best friend like?

My bosom friend is a nice-looking girl, aged 16, with shoulder length fair hair and almond shaped blue eyes. She’s stylish, very intelligent, outgoing and hard-working.

2. Where did you and your friend meet for the first time?

We made friends at our first lesson at the musical school.

3. How often do you see each other?

We see each other almost every day.

4. What do you like to do together?

We really like sing and playing piano together because we’re into music.

5. What career is your best friend going to follow?

My best friend wants to be a conductor of adult’s choir.

6. What would you recommend a teenager who wants to be a good friend?

I’d recommend a teenager who wants to be a good friend to be friendly and honest with people and to be able to keep secrets.

My favourite animal is an owl because it symbolizes the intelligence and wisdom.

2. What pets are the most popular in Russia in your opinion?

In my opinion the most popular pets in Russia are cats, dogs and, maybe, parrots.

3. Is it right for people to keep exotic animals as pets? Why?
